Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) are the systems that assure proper design, monitoring, and control of manufacturing processes and facilities. cGMPs are meant to be the minimum requirements to manufacture, store, and transport food. FSMA is the most sweeping reform of FDA’s food safety authority in more than 70 years. This act gives FDA new and enhanced mandates and authorities to protect consumers and promote public health by shifting the focus from responding to foodborne illness to preventing it.
Producers of food and beverages will be required to comply with these sweeping regulations and update their Good Manufacturing Practices of GMP’s. The law applies to all food and dairy processors who manufacture products that are not regulated by USDA FSIS (meat and poultry). The law also applies to food importers, manufacturers of pet food and animal feed and farms that grow fruits and vegetables.
The FSMA regulation deals with the requirements of current good manufacturing practices, hazard analysis, and risk-based preventive controls. FSMA requires a Food Safety plan; requires the consideration of biological, chemical, physical, and economically motivated food safety hazards as well as allergen control.

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requires FDA-regulated food and beverage facilities to have at least one Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI). A FSMA PCQI must have successfully completed the FDA-recognized training program, provided by the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA). All FDA Regulated Food and Beverage Facilities are required to have a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) on site to prepare and oversee implementation of the facility’s Food Safety Plan in compliance with FSMA requirements. This course is recognized by the FDA as meeting the requirements to become a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI). Individuals successfully completing this training will receive a certificate from the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA).
